Writing Tip # 1

One of the biggest mistakes some of us make when we write is telling the reader instead of showing the reader. I want to be able to paint a picture in my mind of what is going on in that moment in the book. When you tell what's going on it's dull and boring and makes me want to slam the book in the wall, okay maybe not that dramatic, but you get my point hopefully!

An example of telling the reader goes something like this....

"The alarm clock rang and I got up, then I took a shower, got dressed, ate breakfast, and went out the door making my way to school."

Wow, isn't that the most interesting thing you have read in your life? In order to draw in a reader, you need to add in emotions, thoughts, anything that will bring the reader in basically. Now we shall look at a better example, we will show and not tell to the reader.

"The alarm clock struck precisely at 7. Inwardly I groaned having no desire to go to school today. You could say I wasn't a morning person.  I forced myself to roll out of my warm covers and into the shower. Quickly, I let the warm water seep into my skin, and then I extended my hand out of the shower, reaching for a towel. After my shower I pondered on what to wear, not that I actually cared, I decided on my forest green sweatshirt and a pair of my ragged old navy blue jeans. I walked down the carpeted stairs to see my mother at the bottom, her stern face was staring directly at me. She knew I would try to skip out on breakfast. Mother said to me once that there was always a few minutes to spare for breakfast. Following her order, I scanned across the room looking for something to eat on the go. I noticed a fresh bag of apples lay scattered across the counter top, seeing as an apple was easy to carry along I took it and headed out the door for another day of school."

Okay so do you see my point? I was showing not telling you. Of course this could still be better, but I just thought of this example at the top of my head. Anyways, in this example, we learn things about the main character, they aren't a morning person, they do not care what they are to wear, and they do not like to eat breakfast.

See how easy it is to change a simple mistake and make it a hundred times better? That concludes my first writing tip! *Smiles*. There will be many more tips to come to improve your writing, but for now all I can say is have a great Friday!
